VALLÉE DU GIFFRE

Written by: Ella Richardson

Two weeks in the French Alps feels like a dream. I came for the bike parks but couldn’t resist putting my road bike in the car too, for the 10 hour drive through France.

When I started planning routes I didn’t even think about the fact I’m staying in a valley and the only way to get anywhere, is to climb. But nothing beats waking up and chucking on your bike kit to ride riding through the most beautiful villages, up steep cols with unbelievable rock formations, finding waterfalls for a picnic and pedalling home through the sunset.

My favourite thing is to stop by the bakery on the way back from rides to grab a baguette for lunch. It feels like a part of the culture to have one, something I would never do at home but when in France, right? I love seeing the same people there, everyone is friendly towards cyclists and loves seeing us ride through the town.

The Col de Joux Plane into Morzine that’s featuring on this years Tour de France is on my bucket list. The gradient gets steeper, the air a little thinner and in a short 25km I’ve done over 1000 metres of climbing. It’s madness, beautiful madness. At the top, there are caravans already parked up, wearing their polka dot jerseys, waiting for the peloton to arrive. Surrounded by cows bells chiming while they graze.

There is so much more to explore here on two wheels, I can’t wait to return and attack some more climbs and maybe even eat a few more baguettes.
